Tim Patrick mi sed the entire 2022 NFL season for the Broncos after suffering a torn ACL in training camp.It appears that he may meet a similar fate in 2023.Patrick suffered an apparent leg injury at Broncos practice on Monday during a seven-on-seven drill. The veteran receiver ran a route but fell to the Mexico Jersey ground without being contacted as he changed directions. You can hear Tim Patrick scream as he goes down. Almost a year to the day that he tore his ACL .. 363 days actually (ACL was August 2, 2022) Romi Bean (@Romi_Bean) The 29-year-old wideout had to be carted off as a result of the injury.Naturally, there was plenty of concern about Patrick. He was expected to fight for the team's No. 3 receiver job a role he had previously occupied during the 2021 season and, at a minimum, bring veteran depth to that receiver room. Now, it looks like the Broncos may have to withstand another season without Patrick. Here's what to know about his injury and how it will impact Denver's wide receiver depth chart.IYER: Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed that the team fears that Patrick suffered a torn Achilles at Broncos practice on Monday. He broke the news to reporters after practice."We're evaluating his left Achilles," Payton said after revealing the team's prognosis. "That's what we think the injury is. We haven't confirmed it and won't at least until the MRI, but there wasn't any contact. He was just coming out of a cut."Sean Payton said appears to be left Achilles injury for Tim Patrick. Its always difficult to watch. Mike Klis (@mikeklis) While Denver is waiting to officially confirm the injury, if Patrick did in fact tear his Achilles he will mi s the entire 2023 NFL season. The silver lining for him is that this injury occurred in his left leg while his ACL tear was in his right leg.Still, the injury is a blow AC Milan Jersey to Patrick, who was looking forward to returning to the sidelines after his mi sed 2022 season. He last played during the 2021 campaign and recorded 53 catches, 734 yards and five touchdowns while starting all 16 of the team's games. At that time, Patrick looked like a long-term fit alongside Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy in Denver's receiving corps. Now, there are once again questions about exactly who will serve as the team's No. 3 receiver.MORE: Patrick wasn't the only player to exit Denver's receiver room on Monday. The team also waived 2020 second-round pick KJ Hamler with a non-football illne s designation after he was diagnosed with pericarditis a mild heart irritation.Hamler explained in an Instagram post that the condition was uncovered after he felt chest pains during a workout. The good news is that NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that Hamler is expected to mi s weeks, not months, with the illne s and the Broncos would be interested in bringing him back at that point. However, there is no guarantee that Hamler will be available to return to Denver. He could be claimed off waivers by another team or he could simply choose not to sign with the Broncos after he clears waivers. So, why did the Broncos part with Hamler? Well, Denver was unable to put Hamler on the non-football illne s (NFI) list without officially ending his season, so they had to keep him on the roster to have a chance of playing him. Unfortunately, the teamneeded additional receiver depth after Patrick's injury so the Broncos could no longer afford to keep the Penn State product. As mentioned, the Broncos could still reunite with Hamler down the line once he is ready to play. But for now, their decision to release him will create a wide-open battle for the Broncos' No. 3 receiver job.MORE: Below is what Denver's wide receiver depth chart looks like after Patrick's injury and Hamler's departure.RankPlayer1Jerry Jeudy2Courtland Sutton3Marvin Mims Jr.4Marquez Callaway5Kendall Hinton6Montrell Washington7Brandon Johnson8Jalen Virgil9Michael Bandy10Lil'Jordan Humphrey11Taylor GrimesJeudy and Sutton are established as the top targets for Ru sell Wilson, but beyond them, the team's pecking order at receiver is a lot murkier. As it stands Mims, a third-round rookie, probably has the most upside of the receiver group. The expectation is that he will see increased opportunities with Patrick and Hamler out. Still, he will have to stave off competition from Callaway and Hinton to lock that role down.Callaway caught 46 pa ses for 698 yards and six touchdowns during Payton's last season with the Saints, so he has intimate knowledge of the coach's system, which is a plus. Meanwhile, Hinton caught a career-high 24 pa ses for 311 yards for the Broncos last season while playing 40.6 percent of the team's offensive snaps, good for third-most among the team's receivers.Beyond that, the rest of the Broncos are fighting for roster spots. As it stands, Johnson, who played 18 percent of the team's offensive snaps last season, has the most experience while Washington and Virgil are also roster holdovers who played key roles on special teams for the squad. Washington was a strong return man, so he may have the inside track to make the final roster.Newcomers Bandy, Humphrey and Grimes will also look to stake their claims to a roster spot with the recently-signed Bandy who starred in the 2022 preseason, recording 18 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns looking like the player with the most upside. Still, they are more likely fighting for practice squad spots than anything else.No matter how you look at it, the lo ses of Patrick and Hamler are problematic for the Broncos. They simply don't have a lot of depth and experience at the receiver position, so losing two of their top-five projected pa s catchers could have a negative impact on the team's offense.
